Nutec wendy houses- the modern way to build wendy houses and garden sheds.

Nutec is an investment in quality.

It is a slightly more expensive way to build a wendy house or garden shed, but it will last as long as you want it to, be easy to maintain, and take all that the Cape weather can throw at it.

Nutec is a man-made, fibre cement board. It is impervious to rot, rodents leave it only, is fire retardent, and can be painted just like any other wall in your house.

If you want a low maintenence, long lasting, wendy house or garden shed, that will last many, many Cape Town seasons, then invest in Nutec quality.

Cladding type

Flat panel

Flat panel Nutec wendy houses use large sheets of Nutec to clad the timber framing. This type of cladding is quick and easy to install, reducing build times, and overall costs. However, it does not look as good as planking, the seams are harder to weather proof (and keep weather proof), and is harder and more expensive to fix if there is a problem in years to come. As a budget option, it does the job, but it is recommended to invest in a Handiplank finish.

Handiplank

This Nutec product mimics a traditional wooden board wendy house style of finish. Individual planks of Nutec board are fitted in horizontal strips, with each board overlapping the one below it. This is aesthetically a much better finish, is more weather proof, and if a plank does fail, only that one plank needs to be replaced. Nutec is an investment, and we highly recommend going the extra and having a Handiplank finish.

Foundations

Pallet style

Pallet style floors are great if the unit is not permanent, or if planning is an issue. The floor is supported on brick piles and is constructed like a wooden pallet, with cross beams of timber supporting a plank floor. Its less common in Nutec units.

Concrete slab

A solid foundation that is permanent, and probably needs proper planning permission. This type of foundation is essential for strong, sturdy longlasting structures. You no longer have a wendy house, but more of a timber framed structure. This is the most common type of foundation for Nutec homes.

Wooden piles

Solid timber poles are driven deep into the ground, with a pallet style platform built on top. Perfect for uneven terrain, to maximize a view, or to avoid unsuitable ground (flooding etc). It is a more common foundation for traditional wooden wendys and log homes.

Roofs

Flat roof

This is misleading, it isn't actually flat. This type of roof has only one 'fall', usually from front to back (along the width or the unit- using the shorter side for the drop allows for a steeper angle in the same wall heights). This slight angle allows rain water to run off to be collected in a gutter system. To create this angle, the front wall of the unit is slightly higher than the back. A very low profile building is achieved, perfect if you have issues with blocking views etc. A flat roof also requires less complicated framing, making it a slighlty lower cost option to the alternatives.

Pitched roof

A traditional A frame roof, with a ridge down the middle of the structure creating a fall to either side. With the same height of structure you get a much sharper angle to the roof, making water run off more effective, and the rain is running to two points, making it less likely that gutters will be overwhelmed in heavy weather. A pitched roof is considered by most people to be the more attractive of the two options, making a unit look much more finished. Larger units may have multiple frames creating complex geometry. A frames are more complex to build and install than flat roofs, making them slightly more expensive.

Windows and doors

Wooden frames

Traditional hardwood window and door frames can be installed in Nutec houses, you just paint them to match the rest of the unit. This can be a way of reducing costs in a build. However, they will increase the maintenance required on the unit, creating a weak point in the construction. The glass also tends to be thinner. Overall, a wooden window and door frame is better suited to a traditional wooden wendy house, or log home, where the aesthetic blends with the other materials.

Aluminium frames

Available in white, natural, bronze or even black finishes, Aluminium doors and windows are the more usual choice for Nutec wendy houses and homes. They not only fit the more modern building method, they are without doubt an improvement on traditional wooden frames. Virtually zero maintenance, thicker glass, slick finishes, if you are investing in a long lasting structure, is it really worth saving a few rands on the windows and doors?
